Just a thought to share.. perhaps the door opening solution lies in some sort of trick hinge that extends outward as the door is opening, making the door outer shape clear the front fender's.

I agree with you and sanding off the high spots before hammering it. Those highs become shear planes as you push them down. It would weaken the sheet and leave pock marks to either reweld or fill. Good outcome in the end.

Ok, not a three speed story but my brother and I jammed a v8 into an old 65 Chevy pickup when we were teenagers. It was a three on the tree but we converted it to automatic with a chunk of threaded rod through the floor to use as a shifter. I was driving one day and my dog jumped on my arm thereby jamming the truck into park at about 40 miles per hour. The engine torqued so much that it broke the distributor cap. Five mile walk home. Replaced the cap and amazingly the transmission worked perfectly fine. It was an old two speed slush bucket.

Looks sweet! I think the door hinges might need to be moved into the newly jogged out fender panels - build out the frame behind those panels so the doors can actually open. Then weld up some sheet metal to fill in the gaps and slap some paint on her and she's ready for her go-go machine! Loving the build. The shirts are super cool too.

Yes sir you are doing the old time metal working that would have been done on these vehicles when they were in service. Granted in the body shop business as well as mechanical repair we have the flat rate manual dictating what should be the reasonable time to make a repair. In a perfect world this generally covers the bulk of repair procedures. But when we are doing this type of auto body work it is hard to adhere to a flat rate schedule and also get the results that would be desired with this older method. Along with the introduction of bondo it of course brought in a different type of repair in that the repair can be done quicker, and of course the repair is done in the allotted time, so the shop does not lose any money on the repair. That would be understandable. The conflict is the two levels of expense one which consumes more time due to its procedure and the other of course does not. Getting the mindset of people to understand the difference between the two is the biggest challenge. For these classic cars and these specialty builds I would think that the older method would be preferred.
